MUVs replace Sedans in India and they are in maximum demand in present day market. In the second quarter of 2012, history was created when for the first time ever these MUVs outperformed sedans in their respective price ranges. Mahindra XUV500 has been the biggest reason behind this surge in demand for MUVs, SUVs, and crossovers in the country. Ertiga from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Innova are two other favourites amongst the masses.
XUV500 has become such a rage that it managed to sell 50% in excess compared to all other cars for first quarter of FY 2013 in the vehicle’s executive segment, which ranges from Rs 11-15 Lacs. The total number of Mahindra’s new sensation sold were 9,000 units, while other popular cars like Chevy Cruze, Skoda Laura, Corolla Altis, Volkswagen Jetta, and Honda Civic collectively sold only 6,432 units. Another big player in MUV segment, Toyota Innova sold a whopping 20,000 units. At a lesser price range, Ertiga has been giving a cut throat competition to sedans like VW Vento, Honda City, and Hyundai Verna. An average of 6,000 units of Ertiga is getting sold every month.
Moving over to premium segment of Rs 20-25 Lacs, the same story continues where Ford Endevour, Toyota Fortuner, and Skoda Yeti sold a total of 5,580 units, while the up class sedans like Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry managed to sell just 1,244 units.
